Barnes Hall Farm

Creating a co-living space within a farmstead of historical interest.

Local Authority:  Sheffield City Council

Expertise Used:

  • Heritage Statement (Andrew Whitham Ltd)

  • Pre-Application

  • Planning application

Barnes Hall Farm is a collection of buildings that date back as far are the 16th century and sit within 1.17 acres of land. The buildings all centre around a courtyard, which is a rarity in this location and made it very desirable for this development.

We worked in partnership with the client (Open House Project), the architect CE+CA and Historic Buildings Advisor Andrew Whitham Ltd to deliver a pre-application. The Local Authority accepted the principle of developing the site at the pre-application stage acknowledging that the re-use of the group of buildings was both desirable and
inherently sustainable.

The main issues faced by this project was the adaptability of the buildings, four of which are listed. However, policy and legislative boundaries provided a clear point of reference for us to help the client find an outcome that suited all.

Planning permission was granted, and the development is underway.
