Project Profile: Bespoke building accommodating 716sqm of floorspace and commissioned by Sheffield City Taxis who having outgrown their existing premises wanted to build on their core administrative/call centre and driver training function and develop their headquarters in a central location with easy access to Sheffield’s commercial and public transport hubs and to the strategic highway network.
The architects adopted a simple contemporary approach in the design sitting the upper two floors, which house the main office function, on a podium (accommodating the main entrance and recepton area). The materials palette was limited to industrial brick (two tone), windows were set into deep reveals and the stairwell punched above eaves providing a strong vertical element to counter the horizontality of the main elevations. Balconies were hung overlooking a private landscaped area. The overall objective was to ensure that the elevations remained as uncluttered as possible with a sharp edge in keeping with the recent history of the industrial area.
Key issues: The planning input was initially focussed on challenging existing policy constraints. The site is located within a high risk flood zone, as a consequence Crowley Associates was required to sequentially test the site in order to determine the availability, suitability and viability of alternative development sites in less high risk locations. Having overcome this obstacle it was necessary to shift the local authority’s perceptions as regards the operational parameters of a modern, large scale, taxi hire business, which, they believed, would be contrary to emerging and adopted policy in the location proposed. Following on we worked creatively with a very specific set of regeneration and sustainability objectives in order to develop a design solution, which met the needs of all parties. Pre-application negotiation was critical to the process as was the preparation of a strong suite of supporting documents including a needs assessment, a planning statement and a design and access statement, all of which were prepared by Crowley Associates.
